A large floor installation, Before Recollection, consisted of about one thousand small, thin, handmade porcelain pieces that conceptually refer to my interest in perceptions of identity, the metaphor and psychology of water & air, and porcelain’s inherent characteristics, by addressing the idea of reflection, which I considered to be opposite of containment. Several pieces were suspended from monofilament, “floating” just above the floor pieces. Subtle air movements caused the hanging pieces to move and the sound of porcelain ringing should trigger associations with a large body of water… referencing ocean/floor, nature/architecture, silence/sound, stillness/movement.
